~~Puppy Care~~
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW PUPPY!!!!!
You are now the proud owner of a Very Special Miniature or Toy Schnauzer Puppy. Just
like a new Baby, there is work to be done so your lifestyle isn't totally disrupted. You must
remember this is a Puppy who will be Fully Grown in just a few months, so you only have
a short while to establish your Ground Rules. If you don't work daily with this puppy, you
may end up with an ill-mannered adult dog. If given lots of love, and trained and handled
properly, your dog will provide years of enjoyment. You are the Adult - Puppy is the child -
You are the Boss, don't forget this! Schnauzers are Very Lively, Intelligent curious dogs by
nature. You will be surprised how quickly they learn if taught with consistency and
firmness. Below are some Guidelines that will Assist you in the upcoming future.
VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH CARE!!!!!
Your puppy is current on it's vaccinations as of the date it was sold. Details
of which are on the Sales Agreement & Health Guarantee provided in your
Puppy Pak. However, you will need to consult your Veterinarian for his/her
recommended future vaccination schedule. Please Treat your puppy as if it
has had No shots at least until the next booster is given by your
Veterinarian. Please refrain from taking the puppy to the pet Store, Park,
Groomer, etc., until absolutely necessary. Parvo and Distemper are
airborne diseases and puppies that have not had their shots are very
susceptible to being infected, possibly resulting in death.
FEEDING!!!!!
Dry puppy food is Recommended, one of high quality with the appropriate combination of
protein, fat, vitamins, etc., for a new puppy. These ingredients are essential in order to maintain
a healthy pet with a nice shiny coat, and strong teeth and bones. You have been provided a
small bag of food that your puppy is currently eating. You should keep your puppy on that food
for a few days until it is settled in, an stress free. If you decide to change your puppies food,
mix 1/3 of the new food with the 2/3 of the old food for 2 days, then 2/3 of the new food with
1/3 of the old food for 2 days, then 100% of the new food on the 5th day. If you change the
puppy's food rapidly without an adjustment period, the puppy is likely to get diarrhea. Do not
feed the puppy ANYTHING other than dog food! Feed the Puppy 3 times a day if possible,
but no less than 2 times/day. Do not leave the food down for your puppy for more than a few
minutes. At the end of his/her "mealtime", pick up the food until the next scheduled feeding.
This will teach your puppy that he/she can only eat at certain times of the day.
TEETH!!!!!
It is all too common for Toy Breeds to have Retained Teeth. Retained Teeth cause plaque and
bacteria build up. This is a major cause of health problems in these Tiny babies. It can cause heart
and kidney problems, and others. You need to keep the baby teeth pulled as they become loose and
be sure they are removed by the time they reach 8 months of age. Then keep your precious baby on
a good teeth cleaning schedule. Brushing their teeth can certainly be of great benefit. . Please
practice good Dental Care. Rope toys, hard plastic chew toys, nyla bones, budda bones, edible
bones, all natural treats, just to name a few, are good things to give your little one. DO NOT,
however give your puppy rawhide chews, unless they are in tiny pressed together pieces. Any large
pieces of rawhide that your puppy swallows can be lodged in the intestines causing expensive surgery
or death. RAWHIDE IS NOT DIGESTIBLE. There are many dental bones out there that are mint
flavored, good for the teeth, and the puppy like them. I actually prefer to use the "Greenies". They're
made of Wax, and I recommend one every other Day - it will help prevent plaque
UPSET STOMACH!!!!!
Puppies will get into things that will upset their stomach. Any kind of stress
can also cause a loose stool. If your puppy is vomiting and/or has diarrhea,
it is VERY IMPORTANT that it be stopped as soon as possible - consult your
Veterinarian IMMEDIATELY!! You should not let this condition go
unattended, as it can easily result in dehydration and can be life threatening
to your puppy within a very short period of time. Make sure you have NO
poisonous plants that your puppy can chew on. Be cautious of any plant that
produces a white, milky substance when it is cut or you snap off a leaf.
These plants can cause the puppy to become very ill, and if he/she has
ingested enough, even die. Watch your puppy outside, he/she is very curious
and can get into everything
HYPOGLYCEMIA!!!!!
A large percent of Toy Size puppies experience a condition called, Hypoglycemia (low blood
pressure). Hypoglycemia is NOT Genetic. Hypoglycemia is preventable, treatable, and
correctable. When a puppy, small in size, has a hypoglycemia attack, some vets jump to
the conclusion that is a liver shunt. In most cases this is not true. Symptoms of
Hypoglycemia is lethargy or depression, trembling, gums are white, teeth are clenched, and
in extreme cases seizures. Should a seizure occur, death could be eminent. You must
immediately give you puppy sugar. Nutra Cal or Nutra Stat on hand is excellent for this.
Should you not have this, you can substitute Karo Syrup, corn syrup, honey, etc. Do not
try to use artificial sweeteners. Do not let one meal go by uneaten or unnoticed. Your
puppy needs to eat three times a day. Until your puppy has adjusted well into it's new
surrounding, letting the food soak up warm water for each feeding is a must. Sometimes a
flavorful enticement with canned food is a necessary thing. Supplement your puppy two to
three times a day with a nutritional supplement before feeding. This is to keep you puppy's
blood sugar level up. For people who work and are not supervising their puppy all day, this
is very essential.
